Ensemble of Vilnius Jesuits Monastery Buildings

St Casimir Church and Jesuit House of Profesas were built next to the City Hall in the area restricted by Didžiosios, Savičiaus, Augustinų and Šv. Kazimiero streets. The ensemble was built at the same time after St Casimir’s canonisation in 1604. The ensemble consists of the church and monastery buildings. Highly raised St. Casimir Church’s dome crowned with the duke’s mitre clearly stands out in the panorama of the Old Town of Vilnius. Like many old churches in Vilnius, St Casimir Church burned several times, and Napoleon’s army turned it into a grain warehouse. The religious assignment of the prayer house changed several times: in 1864-1868, here St Nicholas Sobor was founded. In 1915, the Germans turned the church into the Evangelical Lutheran Prayer House of Vilnius crew and in 1917 it was returned to Catholics. The House of Profesas consists of a monastery house, an officina, and an economy building built in the 17^th century. After the Jesuit Order was abolished in 1773-1798, here the monks - emeritus were housed. Later the buildings were used for barracks and military hospitals. After the war, A. Vienuolis Secondary School was established here. In 1991, the buildings returned to Jesuits and Vilnius Jesuit Gymnasium was restored in its renovated part.
