Complex of Vilnius University buildings

Vilnius University, founded in 1579, is considered one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe. The complex consists of Vilnius St. John the Baptist and Church of John the Apostle and Evangelist, a belfry, university buildings and thirteen courtyards. The complex was being created for several centuries. Hence, one can find buildings of various architectural styles there. The church, which was built in 1426, was originally Gothic but in the early 18th century it acquired distinct features of the late Baroque. It is distinguished by the composition of ten Presbyterian altars which is the only one in Lithuania and the Baltic States. The belfry, which featured the Renaissance and late Baroque architecture in 1600-1610, is home to the largest Foucault pendulum in Lithuania and the highest viewpoint in the Old Town of Vilnius. The bell tower is 68 m high. The courtyards are named after eminent University professors and students. There grow various trees which are botanical natural heritage objects. The University holds many works of art located from the front door to the ceiling of the Department of Baltic Studies.
