Old town of Vilnius

The Old Town of Vilnius, beginning of which dates back in the Middle Ages, is one of the largest urban complexes in Eastern Europe. Its area is 352 ha. It includes 74 blocks with 70 streets and alleys, as well as 1,487 buildings with the total area of 1,497,000 m².  In the 800-year old city, various nations and cultures have been living for a long time with strong interactions between Eastern and Western cultures. Therefore, the Old Town of Vilnius is rich in Catholic, Orthodox, Jewish prayer houses and cultural monuments, as well as museums and architectural monuments. Although the Old Town is dominated by the Baroque style, there is a variety of other architectural styles, such as Gothic, Renaissance, and Classicism. The Old Town of Vilnius has preserved a radial network of streets and authentic buildings of defensive, residential, representational and sacral purpose, reflecting different historical layers. In 1994, the Old Town of Vilnius was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
