Verkiai Palace Homestead

On the outskirts of Vilnius city and the steep cliff of the Neris river, there is one of the most prominent decorations of Verkiai Park - the palace with officinas which Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius and his teacher Martynas Knakfus rebuilt upon the wishes of Bishop Ignotas Jokūbas Masalskis. The palace had several halls, 30 rooms, a museum, a huge library, a chapel, a treasury, and a theatre. After the death of Bishop Masalskis, the palace was passing from hands to hands and thus started to deteriorate. The palace got slightly recovered when it went to the German-born Count and the Russian Army Colonel Ludwig Adolf Wittgenstein who married Stefanija Radvilaitė. He had even made a winter garden there. But since the early 19th century hard times for Verkiai Park and a homestead came. This period of the palace deterioration slightly stabilised only in the late 20th century. Presently, entry to the palace is limited and only the hall and wall decor have survived in the eastern officina but the halls are empty.
