Verkiai Palace Homestead

On the outskirts of Vilnius city and the steep cliff of the Neris river, there is one of the most prominent decorations of Verkiai Park - the palace with officinas which Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius and his teacher Martynas Knakfus rebuilt upon the wishes of Bishop Ignotas Jokūbas Masalskis. The palace had several halls, 30 rooms, a museum, a huge library, a chapel, a treasury, and a theatre. After the death of Bishop Masalskis, the palace was passing from hands to hands and thus started to deteriorate. The palace got slightly recovered when it went to the German-born Count and the Russian Army Colonel Ludwig Adolf Wittgenstein who married Stefanija Radvilaitė. He had even made a winter garden there. But since the early 19^th century hard times for Verkiai Park and a homestead came. This period of the palace deterioration slightly stabilised only in the late 20^th century. Presently, entry to the palace is limited and only the hall and wall decor have survived in the eastern officina but the halls are empty.
