St. Steponas Church

A diamond of late Renaissance stands next to Vilnius bus station. It is now closed St. Steponas’ Church built in 1604 upon the initiative of Jesuit priest Simonas Visockis. The church was considered to be the royal gate to Vilnius - all the solemn guests’ meetings started at this church and continued along Rūdninkų street towards the City Hall, the Royal Palace, and Vilnius Cathedral. There were cemeteries near the church where not only the victims of the plague but also famous Vilnius residents were buried. The most famous of them is Laurynas Stuoka Gucevičius. In the period of Tsar, a prison and later a stone cutters workshop was built in the church. During the World War II, the church was even more ruined, and in 1948, when the tile workshop was built nearby, it was converted into a warehouse. The church is currently being restored and it is planned to hand it over to the believers in the future.
