Holy Spirit Orthodox Church

In the Old Town of Vilnius, close to the Gate of Dawn, the most important Orthodox prayer house in Lithuania - Holy Spirit Orthodox Church stands behind a plain wall. The monasteries and nunneries in the vicinity of the Orthodox Church are the only ones such in Lithuania. The House of Prayer in Lithuania has been used since 1597. The killed martyrs of Vilnius Antanas, Jonas and Eustachijus are buried in the church. The dukes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania secretly accepted Orthodox Church beliefs and disobeyed the Duke’s order to eat meat when fasting. In 1749, the church burned down and a Baroque iconostasis adorned with columns and sculptures was built instead of it. Under the iconostasis, there is a crypt where the remains of three martyrs were solemnly moved in 1952. During World War I, the holy relics were taken to Moscow. There they were kept until 1946 when Stalin allowed to return the remains to Vilnius by issuing a special order.
