Palace Ensemble of Petras Vileišis

In 1904-1906, near the Church of Peter and Paul on the bank of the Neris, the most prominent Lithuanian engineer Petras Vileišis built a palace on an artificially filled hill. Construction materials, such as cement, concrete, and reinforced concrete overlays, used at that time were still rare in Lithuania. People said that the lime had been diluted not with water but with separated milk. The foundation stones were hewed in Finland. Furnace tiles were taken from Holland. Instead of traditional brick chimneys, copper and stainless pipes were equipped. A yellow brick dwelling house was built next to the palace. In its basement, P. Vileišis established the printing house of the newspaper Vilniaus žinios, the editorial office and administration of the newspaper on the ground floor, and the upper floor was dedicated to the tenants. On 9 January 1907, the first exhibition of Lithuanian art was opened in the rooms on the first floor. It was arranged by the artists A. Žmuidzinavičius, M. K.  Čiurlionis, and sculptor P. Rimša.
