A Chapel in Žukiškės

On the way from Trakai to Rūdiškės, under the shelter of the village forest, one can easily notice the Chapel of Žukiškės. It is a one-hundred-year old rotten tree (made at the beginning of XX century) and  a smaller brother of Dionizas Poška Baubliai in the village of Bijotai. It is a 2,2- meter-high oak tree with a diameter of 1,3 meters. There is a cavity carved on the trunk and covered with a glass. Earlier, sculptures were kept there, but now only a picture of a saint, a candle or flowers (brought by Žukiškiai dwellers or the neighbouring residents) are put there. This oak chapel is a nice combination of Paganism and Christianity. Oak was always considered to be sacred for Lithuanians. Big empty- trunk trees (baubliai) were more popular in Samogitia and were hardly ever seen in Eastern Lithuania, so this chapel is one of several having remained in the region.
