Vytautas the Great Museum

Upon the order of Pranas Liatukas, Commander - Lieutenant General of the Armed Forces, the museum was started to be built on 15 December 1919. Lieutenant General Vladas Nagevičius was appointed as the organiser of the museum. He made the first exposition of the Military Museum within 24 days in the old wooden mansion of the Tsarist Russian army. The museum was officially opened on 16 February 1921 when the Republic of Lithuania celebrated the 3rd Anniversary of Independence. The museum was consecrated by priest Jonas Mačiulis-Maironis. Aleksandras Stulginskis, who at that time held the office of president, took part in the ceremony. On 28 November 1930, while commemorating the 500th anniversary of the death of Vytautas the Great, the cornerstone of the new War Museum building was consecrated. Soil brought from Gediminas Hill and Rasos Cemetery and places related to the fights for the Independence of Lithuania was thrown to the foundations. On 16 February 1936, the new museum building was officially opened. During the occupation, the museum lost its name, but kept its direction - it became the State History Museum. On 29 January 1990, the name of Vytautas the Great War Museum was returned.
