Vytautas' Church

The official name of Vytautas’ Church in Kaunas is the Church of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary. Historians claim that Grand Duke Vytautas in the battle with Tartars (Vorsklos Battle) was beaten and was close to drowning. He managed to survive and as a gratitude to Holy Virgin Mary promised to build a church on river bank. The church was built in 1400. This is the oldest Gothic church in Kaunas and the only one in the territory of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania which has a shape of a cross. Built on the right side of the river, the church served not only the believers, but also helped the ships to orientate. The bank had a quay where sailboats and later steamboats could moor. Goods were delivered to other towns. On January 13, 1877 next to the church Nemunas water level measurement station was built.
