The Old Jewish Cemetery in Vilnius

From 1830 to World War I, Olandų str. hosted the Old Jewish Cemetery, where about 70,000 Jewish people were buried. A road from the Old Town and along Krivių str. and Užupio str. led to the cemetery and was called the Road of Death, or the Road of the Dead. In 1961, the cemetery started to be destroyed. In 1968, it was completely demolished. Only some of the famous cultural figures were reburied in Sudervė Jewish cemetery, in Viršuliškės. Memorial stones from the cemetery were used to build steps to Tauras Hill, the National Library, and Antakalnis hospital. In the former territory, new houses and the Funeral House were constructed. Only in 2004, a part of the gate leading to the cemetery was rebuilt. Tombstone remains were used to erect a monument to commemorate the Jewish buried here.
