Cathedral of the Theotokos in Vilnius

There is a memorial board at the entrance to the Sobor of the Assumption of Our Lady stating that it was begun in 1346 upon the initiative of Mary, the wife of Grand Duke Algirdas of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1348, it was completed and consecrated. In 1511-1522, the Sobor was rebuilt by using the funds of Duke Konstantin Ostrogiškis. It is one of the oldest Christian shrines in Vilnius and the second oldest among the Orthodox shrines. And only the Church of the Holy Martyr Paraskeva is older. During its long lifetime, the Sobor served not only to the believers. There were university lecture halls and a library, as well as barracks and a warehouse. In 1868, the church was restored according to the project of the famous architect of that time Nikolai Chagin and returned to the believers. The main pride of Sobor is the only classical 5-floor iconostasis created in 1864, in Lithuania.
