Vilnius Synagogue

Before the World War II, there were just over 100 Jewish prayer houses in Vilnius. Currently, only one - Vilnius Choral Synagogue, also known as Taharot Hakodesh or Vilnius Synagogue, is being used. The synagogue is called choral because it is accompanied by choral chanting during the service. A 2-floor Mauritanian-style synagogue opened in 1903 during the Jewish New Year even though a permit to build a synagogue was received back in 1847. During the occupation of Vilnius, Nazi German soldiers established a pharmacy in the synagogue which helped it remain till nowadays. Men pray on the ground floor, while women pray and a choir chants on the 1st floor. Service is held every day following the Mitnagdim traditions. Mitnagdim is an Orthodox movement created by Vilnius Gaon.
