The ensemble of the buildings of the Carmelite Monastery of Vilnius

The ensemble consists of St. George’s Church, located in the middle of the quarter and surrounded by a monastery on the east and north, a belfry on the southeast, and an arcade belfry on the southwest. The buildings form three enclosed courtyards. The first Gothic wooden church, under the sponsorship of Mikalojus Radvilaitis, Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, was built in 1506, and a few years later a monastery was built to invite the Carmelites of the old regulation. The church and monastery burnt down in fire in 1749. The church was rebuilt in 1750-1755 at the initiative of Jurgis Radvila, Naugardukas Voivodeship, and is considered one of the most impressive examples of the late Baroque architecture in Lithuania. In 1797, the monastery was closed and given to the diocesan seminary, which operated until 1945. In 1946, a repository of old publications of the National Martynas Mažvydas Library opened. In 2011, it was decided to return the church and monastery to the Archdiocese of Vilnius.
