Vilnius Gaon Jewish Museum

Jewish Culture Museum in Vilnius is deeply rooted and has strong traditions. The first museum which depicts the Jewish culture was founded in Vilnius in 1913 by the Jewish Ancient Amateur Society. The Lithuanian State Jewish Museum was restored in 1989 and most of the exhibits were returned to it.  In 1997 when commemorating the 200th year of the death of Vilnius Gaon, the museum was renamed after Vilnius Gaon. The museum is located in a building where Jewish theater acted during the interwar period. The museum consists of five branches, the following three of which are operating: Tolerance Center, Holocaust Exposition, and Paneriai Memorial. Currently, two other branches Jacques Lipchitz Museum in Druskininkai and Lithuanian Jewish Culture and Identity Museum are still under construction. The main building of the museum after the restoration in 2001 opened the door as the Tolerance Center.
