Vilnius Evangelical Lutheran Church

Not everyone, who is walking along Vokiečių str. in Vilnius, notices of the House No. 20. Looking from the distance, one can see the church tower. It is the only Evangelical Lutheran church in Vilnius. It was built upon Mikalojus Radvila Black’s initiative in 1555. The cornerstone of the current church was built in 1739. The Church was operating until 1940 when the Soviet authorities forbade it. Shortly after, the internal destruction of the sanctuary began: a part of the altar decorations and sculptures was stolen, the bas-reliefs of the lower part of the pulpit were damaged, the altar was half-bricked up, and the pulpit was demolished. A basketball hall was made on the 1^st floor. Vilnius Evangelical Lutheran Parish recovered on 19 November 1988 and the first service in church was held on 16 February 1990. Since then services are held every Sunday.
