Vilnius Sanctuary of God's Mercy

The Divine Mercy Sanctuary, formerly the Holy Trinity Church, is located in Dominikonų str., Vilnius. The first church in that place was built in the 15th century. After 1748 and 1749 fires in Vilnius, the church was reconstructed: a new presbytery and two towers were built, and a new portal replaced the Gothic apse. In 1821, the Czarist Government converted the church into the orthodox church but in 1920 it was returned to Catholics. During the World War I, here Vilnius Lithuanian Club and Vilnius Lithuanian Students Union worked. During the Soviet occupation, the sanctuary was abandoned. In 2004, the then Vilnius Archbishop Metropolitan Cardinal Audrys Juozas Bačkis founded Vilnius Divine Mercy Sanctuary in the building. It is the only church in Lithuania that is open around the clock and one can pray at any time of the day.
