Vilkija Town Uban Monument

Undistorted name of Vilkija was mentioned for the first time in a letter of Vytautas the Great to the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order in 1426. The letter said: “In our mansion called Vilkija”. After the Treaty of Melnas in 1422 when the western border with the Order was finally set up, the settlement of Vilkija with the castle began to flourish. Intense trade with Gdansk and Königsberg took place by the Nemunas, and a significant land road from Kaunas to Jurbarkas and the seaside was located near the river. In 1969, Vilkija was recognised a local urban monument whose unique shape has been affected by the terrain and the flow of the Nemunas river for centuries. The oldest part of the city on the shore was destroyed when a riverbed changed its direction. Old construction buildings almost disappeared due to frequent fires in the city. Hence, Vilkija is valuable for the whole of its architecture.
