The ensemble of the Basilika of the Visitation of the Blessed Mary

Funded by Lithuanian Grand Duke Vytautas in the XV century, the church became one of eight Lithuanian Basilicas in 2017. Based on the decree Domus Ecclesiae, Pope Francis granted the church the title of a Basilica. The Basilica represents Gothic and Baroque styles. It is a rectangular, two-towered construction having three naves, and a three-wall apse. The interior used to change together with the building itself, however, even today it is possible to see the elements of the interior common to all the historical periods of the six centuries. The Basilica houses the painting of Mother of God well- known for its miracles and grace. This is the first painting in the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania which was awarded golden crowns by the Pope. The original painting was a present to Vytautas the Great given by a Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos on the Christening occasion. During the centuries the painting was restored and made smaller, the lower part was cut off. The painting ‘Mother of God’ is honored not only by Catholics but also other religious communities.
