Trakai Old Town

The Old Town of Trakai is the only town in Lithuania situated between Lakes Galvė, Luka (Bernardinai), Totoriškės, Skaistis and Gilušis. In the Old Town of Trakai, Karaims and Lithuanians, Tartars and Orthodox have lived in a friendly way since ancient times. This has been reflected in the architecture for ages. Both Karaims and Tatars moved to Trakai during the times of Vytautas the Great. Prominent Karaims’ traces can be observed in a house where three windows go to the street: one is for God, one for Karaim and one for the Sovereign (Vytautas the Great). In the Old Town of Trakai, there is one of the three Karaim sanctuaries - Kenesa still used in the world. Also, Karaims Old Town possesses numerous cognitive objects, such as the island castle, the remains of Trakai peninsula castle, Trakai Dominican monastery, and Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God.
