St. George the Martyr Church in Kaunas

It’s one of the first churches in Kaunas. In 1468 a wooden church for Bernardine Monks was built next to the castle. A brick St. George church was started to be built in 1471, but the exact date when it was finished, is not known. It was functioning in 1503. During the centuries, the church suffered greatly from fires, the Russian and Napoleon Armies and the Soviet period. This late Gothic church is one of the five monuments built in 1495-1510, considered as original heritage of Lithuanian national architecture. It is a monumental, long, vertical construction having its rhythmical composition. Its facades have pointed arcs and graceful counterforts. Presbyterian counterforts are really peculiar. They seem like columns which do not touch the wall and supporting not the wall but the arcs above the windows and under-roof cornices
