St. Nicholas Church complex

It is the oldest Catholic brick church in Lithuania built in Gothic style, which dominated in the Baltic States. In 1320, the church was mentioned in the written sources for the first time. Gediminas, Duke of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, when inviting merchants and craftsmen to come to Lithuania, in his letters (1323) wrote that a church had been built for them in Vilnius. The cemetery of St. Nicholas’ Church was mentioned in the Privilege of Jogaila. It is also witnessed by the title, typical of central Europe - St. Bishop Mikalojus (Nicholas) Marinietis, who is the patron of merchants, travellers, captives, craftsmen, and children. The church used to suffer from fires and looting of Napoleon soldiers. The church was rebuilt and redecorated for many times. Since 1901, the church has been the light of Lithuanian culture. Up to 1939, it was the only church in Vilnius where the mass was held in the Lithuanian language. In 1959, a sculpture of the patron of Vilnius - St. Christopher (sculptor Antanas Kmieliauskas) was erected in the churchyard.
