St Gertrude’s Church

At the very end of Laisvės Avenue, on the left side, there is one of the greatest wonders of Kaunas Gothic architecture hidden among the houses. It is small St Gertrude’s Church of a little bit more than 80 sq. m. The first written sources claim that in 1503 Alexander, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, assigned it to Kaunas Parish Church. That means it was built in the 15th century. In 1948, the monastery and the church were closed. In 1988, when the construction started in the quarter, the church was going to be demolished. However, the public opposed it. Since 1991, services have been held in church. The candle shrine in the cellar of St Gertrude’s Church should be mentioned separately. There all year round, at least a few dozen candles are burning around the clock creating a feeling of cosiness and spiritual warmth. Brothers Marijonai take care of the candles.
