Old Trakai Castle Site and its foot

Old Trakai Castle, one of the first brick castles in Lithuania, was located near the Crusaders’ way to Vilnius, therefore, it served as an important defensive castle. Trakai was the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from 1316 to 1323. Grand Duke Vytautas was born here in about 1350. Trying to protect himself from the Crusaders, Lithuanian Duke Skirgaila burned the castle in 1391. Vytautas the Great gave the territory of the castle to Benedictine monks and built a church. The convent survived till 1844 when by the order of Russian Tsar it was closed. Currently on a two-metre- high castle site there is the Lord’s Revelation to Virgin Mary and St. Benedict Church built in 1899 and a convent built in 1770. The castle site is a cultural monument of the Republic of Lithuania.
