Sapieha family residence

The residency of Sapiegos, Trinitarian Monastery and the Church of the Redeemer make up the ensemble of Sapiegos Palace. The residency is of late Baroque style and boasted of elaborate mural decorations surrounded by an old park. The palace was built in 1962 by Kazimieras Jonas Sapiega, the Great Lithuanian Ethmon, based on the project of the Italian architect Giovannio Fredianio (1689-1692). At that time the oldest linden in Vilnius was planted. It is still growing in the park, surrounding the residency. In 1808, the palace went to the hands of Vilnius city and a war hospital was opened here. Later the building hosted hospitals till 1940. Then Vilnius Junker Infantry School was set up here which in 1941 was moved further to the USSR. In 1945, the school was returned here and worked till 1991. In 2012, the residence started to be renovated. And in 2018, it was handed over to the Contemporary Art Centre.
