Samylai Mound

Samylai mound is located near Samylai settlement, Kaunas district, on the bank of Kaunas lagoon. The mound dates back to the I millennium, but previously it stood on the plain, on the left bank of the Nemunas. In 1960, after the construction of Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant and the artificial creation of the lagoon, the mound appeared on the shore of the lagoon. There is a 2-ha settlement in the north and east foothills. A tiny mound has a 6.5 m long and 9 m wide site. Its southern side is filled with a 1 m high and 7 m wide embankment. Nearly 20 m high slopes are steep. It is believed that such mounds had community seniors’ homesteads or hiding places in the early 2nd millennium. During the excavations, moulded and rough pottery parts, stone mills and other household utensils were found. The findings are stored in the National Museum of Lithuania.
