Radvilos Palace

In the 16th century, in the place of the current Radvilos Palace located in the very centre of the city, there was a palace of the richest Lithuanian nobleman Mikalojus Radvila the Black which was situated behind the defensive wall of Vilnius. In the mid-19th century, Jonušas Radvila, the great Lithuanian hetman and Vilnius voivode built a residence palace adorned with Renaissance forms and mannerist decor. The palace belonged to the Radvilos’ family until the early 19th century when Dominykas Radvila donated the abandoned and uninhabited palace to Vilnius Charity Society. The Society hosted the palace until 1940. The palace restoration started in 1967. Then only two buildings and one northern pavilion of the huge palace complex remained and in 1984 the second building was rebuilt as well. The way the palace looked in the Middle Ages is depicted on the medal forged by the German medallist Sebastian Dadler for the inauguration of Jonušas Radvila to the Vilnius Voivodeship. Currently, the branch of the Lithuanian Art Museum is accommodated here.
