Mound called Altona Mount

In the Zapyškis eldership, Altoniškės village, next to the confluence of the Ova and the Nemunas, on the right bank of the Ova, there is Altoniškės mound. The mound was partly destroyed by plows, the adjacent embankment - by trenches, the western side of the site was washed away, and a field road passes on the south-eastern slope. The mound dates back to the early 1st-2nd millenniums. No cultural layer has been observed. The site of the mound is soiled and slopes are overgrown with mixed forests. The south-eastern slope has a 3-ha settlement at the foothill. It is believed that there was a wooden castle in this place in the 13th-14th centuries. Even before the World War I, people were buried in the mound site. The locals sometimes call it the mount of newlyweds’ goddess Altona. It is said that earlier an oak was growing at the top of the mound. Under it the guys from the surrounding villages and farmsteads gathered to ask the goddess to give them wives.
