Pikutiškės, Švedai Mound

In Avižieniai eldership, Vilnius district, right next to Švedai village, there is Pikutiškės Mound which dates back to the 1st millennium. It is also known by the name of the village Švedai. The mound is located on a hill surrounded by the valleys of the Riešė Valley, next to small ponds. Its about 20 m high slopes are rather steep. The nearby old and massive oaks testify that this area was not only important to the ancient inhabitants but it was also sacred. The mound site, which is 28 m long and 8 m wide, has an elongated form. At the southern end of the site there is an embankment with stones of various sizes seen on the outer slope. No archaeological research has been carried out on or near the mound, and its cultural layer has not been studied either. Therefore, neither the age at which the mound was inhabited, nor its purpose can be known exactly.
