The House of Perkūnas

In the Old Town of Kaunas, not far away from Vytautas Church in Aleksoto Street, there is a most beautiful pearl of Kaunas- the House of Perkūnas. It is an architectural Gothic monument built in the XV century. The façade is decorated with rectangular decorative niches and a symbol of Sun, made from glazed stones. The house was first mentioned in written sources in 1564. The first owner was a town dweller Dulkė, who sold his brick house situated on the corner of St. Mary Street in Kaunas. It was done in an open court hearings. The purpose of the house changed year by year. At some time it belonged the Jesuits, later-to the Orthodox. The first theatre of Kaunas (established in 1848) also operated here. During the Soviet period this Gothic monument was turned into a storehouse. Since 1991 the house has belonged to the Jesuits and serves as Kaunas Jesuit Gymnasium.
