Pažaislis Monastery Ensemble

In 1660, Kristupas Zigmantas Pacas, the Grand Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, applied to the chief of the Camaldolean Order in Rome, promising to finance the construction of the church and monastery in Lithuania. After finding a suitable place for the monastery in the picturesque wood area next to the current Kaunas Lagoon, he bought the land from Kaunas land judge Samuelis Oborskis and named it Peace Mount (Mons Pacis). The complex was being built by foreign masters: sculptors and architects from Italy and decorators from Germany. Black and red marble products for construction and decoration were shipped from the Krakow surroundings. The Funder saw the church as the mausoleum of the family. The monastery was turned not only into barracks, a warehouse but also a psychoneurological hospital during the years of war and Soviet occupation. In 1992, buildings were returned to St. Casimir Congregation sisters.
