M.K. Čiurlionis Art Museum

A decade after the death of the most famous Lithuanian composer, artist and cultural figure, it was decided to commemorate him. On 14 December 1921, the Ministry of Culture implementing the Law of the Constituent Seimas on M. K. Čiurlionis’ gallery, founded the oldest art museum in Lithuania. A year later, the Ministry of Education bought all of his works from Sofija Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė, wife of M. Čiurlionis, which made a total of 193 works: 148 paintings and 35 graphic works. They cost 65,000 German gold marks. Today, with 12 branches in Kaunas and Druskininkai, the museum holds more than 450,000 exhibits that reflect the development of Lithuanian art from the Middle Ages to the present day. It not only protects, but also exhibits in changing and permanent exhibitions.
