Maišiagala Mound with the Lower Ward and the Settlement

Maišiagala Mound, also known as Bona Castle, is located on the right bank of the Dūkšta, on a separate hill formed from the edge of a highland. Slopes are of 14 m to 18 m high and overgrown with rare deciduous trees; the site is oval. At the foot of the mound, there is a dug ditch, behind which a mound was made. The mound dates back to the 1st millennium - 14th century. While exploring the mound site, a cultural layer of up to 5.4 m thickness consisting of 3 horizons was found. A variety of valuable articles were found on each horizon. To the northeast of the mound, there is a lower ward destroyed by town buildings. To the north and southwest of the mound, there is a foothill settlement spread over an area of 1 ha. The wooden castle of Maišiagala, which stood on the mound and which belonged to the inner ring of Vilnius security castles, was occupied several times and burned by the Order.
