St Virgin Mary Chapelier’s Church of Kernavė

The first wooden Kernavė church was built in 1420 to 1430. At the beginning, the church was just an affiliate which was a separate subdivision of the parish Catholic Church that is frequently geographically located in another area. There St. Mass is usually held, but no sacraments of Baptism or Marriage are given. In 1495, Ona Kareivaitė Močkuvienė, Governor of Kernavė Manor, established the altaria of St Nicholas. Even now near the church one can see the foundations of the old church built in 1739. The brick church was built in 1910 to 1920 and was mainly funded by American Lithuanians. St Virgin Mary Chapelier’s Church was consecrated on 17 August 1924. The Neo-Gothic style church has one tower and four oak doors. The sanctuary is decorated with the Kernavė Kalvarijos mosaic cycle which was created and presented to the church by the artist Jadvyga Grišiūtė.
