Kaunas Monumental Church of the Resurrection of Christ

In 1922, in Kaunas, the idea appeared to build a church in the then capital as a symbol of gratitude to God for the restored freedom of Lithuania. The role of the nation’s pantheon was given for the church: the most deserving figures of the nation were used to bury in specially crafted crypts and transfer there the remains of those who merited for Lithuania. Only in 1933, after lengthy deliberations, contests, and project redevelopment, the construction of the church began. However, it was not built until the Soviet occupation. In the Soviet era, with the purpose of destroying the interwar heritage and trying to undermine the influence of the church, the building was turned into a radio factory. The building was returned to the believers in 1998, and the construction works were completed only in 2006. Due to its scale, its position on the map of the city and political significance, the church is undoubtedly the most significant example of the interwar Lithuanian sacral architecture.
