Kaunas City Wall

Scientists say there were three stages of building Kaunas city defensive walls. But only one of them was officially documented which, according to scientists, was the oldest. In the present courtyard of Kaunas Musical Theater, the privilege King John Kazimier of 1655 ordered Kaunas citizens to fence the city with masonry walls. The construction started after the war of 1655-1660. In the written sources, the wall and the Miller Tower were first mentioned in 1666. Also, a tower next to the Tatar Gate, which stood closer to Laisvės Avenue, was mentioned but it was demolished along with a part of the wall in 1894. The Miller Tower, which, according to architects’ research, has never been used, stands at the corner of the defensive wall and is the only fragments of the defensive Kaunas wall that have survived to this day.
