Kaunas city part called New City

This part of Kaunas began to develop in the middle of the 19th century when the city became the center of Kaunas Governorate and after forming a rectangular structure of the Tsarist era in 1847 (current Laisvės Avenue and parallel Kęstutis and K. Donelaitis streets). Laisvės Avenue appeared in the city construction plan in 1871. In the interwar period, this part of the city was called the New City. Currently, this part has all the most important buildings and the most famous architectural monuments of Kaunas. Kaunas City Municipality building, Vytautas Monument, Kaunas Sobor, Kaunas Carmelite Church, Freedom Monument built by Juozas Zikaras, Kaunas War Museum, Central Post Office, Kaunas Zoological Museum, Romuva Cinema, and Musical Theater near which Rome Kalanta protesting against the Soviet occupation burnt down on 15 May 1972 are situated in the New City. On 14 May 2002, a memorial monument “Victim’s Field” was unveiled in the place of burning down and the words “Romas Kalanta 1972” was inscribed in the floor.
