Kaunas Jesuit Monastery

The first sources about the Jesuit monastery in Kaunas date back in 1642. The Jesuits began to settle in a small residential house on the territory of the current City Hall. The house was really small because at first the brothers Jesuits did not even have a chapel. The first chapel of the monastery was built in 1643 after buying and reconstructing an adjacent house. By 1671, the Jesuits bought all land plots with buildings between the current streets of Aleksotas and T. Daugirdas and made one large estate. Although in 1773 Pope Clement XIV canceled the Jesuit Order, monks stayed in Kaunas until 1787. On departure, they handed over their church, college and monastery to the Franciscan monks. In the period of Tsar, the church turned into a sobor. In 1949, the church and the monastery were closed (the church was used as a gym, a Finnish sauna was installed under the big altar and a rifle-range in the attic). The monastery was returned to Jesuits on 2 February 1990.
