Kaunas Armed Forces

In Kaunas, near Laisvės Avenue, there is a masterpiece of the interwar modern Renaissance architecture - the building of Kaunas Peacekeepers. In the interwar Lithuania, club and corporate activities flourished. The officers of the developing Lithuanian Armed Forces began to join clubs aimed to support the patriotic spirit in the society. On 23 July 1919, Kaunas soldiers’ club was established. On 30 April 1924, upon the proposal of Jonas Jablonskis and by order of the Minister of National Defense, the club was named the Lithuanian Armed Forces (Lietuvos karininkų ramovė). This name derives from the name of the Romuva of the ancient Baltic tribe temple. The main facade is decorated with the “Three Giants” granite sculpture which has become a symbol of Ramovė. Maironis’ rhymes became the slogan of Ramovė: Let’s defend the language, the earth, and its character! Let’s start work like giants!
