Kaunas Evangelical Lutheran Church

When Martin Luther hammered in his famous 95 theses on the Wittenberg Cathedral walls in 1517, the Lutheran religion was born. The first written sources about the Lutherans in Kaunas date back to 1577 when the Lutheran prayer house opened in a private house at the corner of the Vokiečių (Vokė) near the Turgaus Square. The exterior of the Lutheran church did not differ from the residential house. in 1640, while the tension Between the Catholics and Lutherans was rising, the Catholics received a command from Vladislav Vasa to destroy the Lutherans’ church. The first stone of the Evangelical Lutheran (Holy Trinity) Church was placed in 1682. After a small church was built, the service began in its present place a year later. Only since 1930, people began praying in Lutheran Church in Lithuanian. In the Soviet era, the church was closed and returned to the believers in 1989.
