Kaunas Church of God’s Body

On 29 January 1641, Vladislav Vaza gave the Dominicans consent to buy land plots and houses and build a church and a monastery there. In the late 17th century, a brick monastery connected to the church was built. It was the first Baroque complex of church and monastery buildings in Kaunas that distinguished from the entire, rather Gothic old city architecture. During the Napoleonic era, the church lost all the wooden equipment and turned into a grain warehouse. After the war, the church equipment was gradually rebuilt and seven brick altars were restored. Since 1845, the Church of God’s Body stood deserted and turned into a warehouse. In 1865, it was decided to turn the church into the Orthodox church. Therefore, its towers were demolished and an onion shaped dome was built. After the sanctuary was returned to the Catholics, the dome was demolished. The restored church was given the name of Church of the Blessed Sacrament. However, in 1949, the church was closed again, and, in 1963, it was converted into a cinema hall destroying the entire interior. After 1990, the church was returned to the believers.
