Kaunas Choral Synagogue

In early 20th century, there were almost 20 synagogues and Jewish prayer houses. World War I, and especially World War II and the difficult post-war years, destroyed most of them. In Kaunas there is only one functioning Ohel-Jaakov choral synagogue and several synagogue buildings. This synagogue is called choral because the ceremonies there are accompanied by choral chanting. The synagogue name “Ohel-Jaakov” means “Tent of God” - an allusion to the very first Shrine of the Israelites mentioned in Scripture, in the Book of Exodus. The synagogue project of 17 July 1872 has remained, in which the architect’s name is not mentioned and it is only indicated that architect von Mikvitz supervised the construction of the building. The founder of the synagogue was Levinas Minkovskis, the merchant of the First Kaunas Guild.
