Kaunas Bernardine Convent

Next to St. George the Martyr Church there is a Bernardine Convent. This convent was the beginning of brick Old Town in Kaunas. Archeologists determined that regarding the bricks, concrete, the way the bricks were laid, the convent might be dated back to the end of the XVI century. On April 4, 1471 Cazimir Jagiellon’s Marshal, the head of Gardin, Stanislovas Sudivojaitis gave the inherited estate with the garden on the bank of the river Nemunas near Kaunas Castle to Bernardines for good. In the beginning the authorities did not allow to build a brick convent due to a possible danger to Kaunas brick castle. Even the pope’s permission to move convent was received. Later, however, the authorities changed their mind. During the years, regardless of fires, numerous wars and robberies by different armies, St. George the Martyr Church and Bernardine Convent presumably remain the most precious buildings of the temporary capital of Lithuania.
