Kaunas Archcathedral Basilica

Kaunas St. Apostles Peter and Paul Cathedral Basilica borders Kaunas City Hall Square. It is the largest heritage of Neo-Gothic architecture in Lithuania. The first Kaunas city parish church, which was financed by Vytautas the Great, was written about since 1413. The wooden church has been repeatedly devastated by fires and robberies. The brick church was built in 1800 and it has remained such to this day. In 1895, upon the concern of Bishop Mečislovas Paliulionis, Pope Leon XIII granted the most important diocesan church - cathedral status to the former parish church. In 1921, on the occasion of the 500^th anniversary of the establishment of the Samogitian Diocese, Pope Pius XI granted the title of the Little Basilica to the cathedral. In 1926, after the establishment of the Lithuanian church province, the basilica became the archcathedral with the archbishop’s metropolitan throne.
