Kalvarijos Complex Way of Cross

The 140 ha Kalvarijos Memorial Reserve, which replicates the topography of Jerusalem in the times of Christ, has a created 7-km-long Way of the Cross. It is one of the largest complexes of this kind in Europe, and only two Ways of the Cross in Poland and one Way in Seville are bigger than this one. The Way reveals the whole history of the Taking of Christ and the Way of His Passion. The ensemble of the church, the monastery and the 35 Passion Stations of Cross, created in the 18^th century, has remained little changed since the Soviet era. In 1962, by the order of the Soviet authorities, the Calvary chapels were blown up, except for four, and in 1963, they were finally demolished. After Lithuania regained its independence, the chapels were restored. In about 12 years, Vilnius Kalvarija was completely restored and, in 2002, it was completely rebuilt. Pentecost was again solemnly consecrated.
