Ninth Fort

There was anticipation of the war all over Europe, Russia was reforming and strengthening one of its western frontier defenses. By the early 20th century, Kaunas was surrounded by a ring of 8 forts and 9 batteries. In 1903, the construction of a new fort, which later got the number 9, started at the village of Kumpė. It was supposed to protect strategically important highlands of Linkuva. During the Soviet occupation (1940-1941), the fort was used by the People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD) to keep political prisoners before being taken to Siberia. Since October 1941, during the German Nazi occupation, Jewish were killed here. The biggest massacre took place on 29 October. According to the German report, 2,007 men, 2,920 women and 4,273 children were killed. After World War II, the Soviet authority used the fort as a prison for several years. In 1959, in the Ninth Fort, a museum was opened where the exposition on the Nazi crimes committed in Lithuania was presented. After the restoration of independence, the museum was supplemented with expositions reflecting all stages of the Ninth Fort history.
