Historical Presidency of the Republic of Lithuania

In 1846, built as a residential house, now the Historical Presidency is the branch of National M.K. Čiurlionis Art Museum. In 1866, the residence of Kaunas Governor was established in this building. During the World War I, German Kaiser lived here for a while and a military German administration worked here. In 1919-1940, all three Presidents of the Republic of Lithuania worked and lived in the Palace, i. e. Antanas Smetona, Aleksandras Stulginskis and Kazys Grinius. The sculptures were built in the garden in front of the Presidency to commemorate them. Before the Lithuanian occupation on 15 June 1940, the last meeting of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania took place in the palace. In the Soviet era, the Pioneer Palace, the Teachers’ House, the Cinema, and the Library were established in the building. In 1989, the building was handed over to Vytautas the Great War Museum.
