Grigiškių Mould

Not so far from Vilnius, on the right bank of the bend of the river Vokė, Grigiškių Mound is located. Although the name originates from Grigiškės town, which belongs to the municipality of Vilnius, the mound is in the village of Salos, Trakai region. It dates back to the end of the first millenium and the beginning of the second millenium. The mound was discovered about ten years ago. It happened in 2008-2009. While driving on the highway, a famous discoverer of mounds and other monuments of cultural herritage, a biologist Darius Stončys noticed that there was a typical cave covered with deciduous trees. Moreover, earlier suspitions about the possible mounds on the river Vokė, proved to be true. Unfortunately, due to human industrial activity and electrification, the original structure of the mound is severely damaged. Now you can easily observe a landslide on the nort-western slope.
