Holy Virgin Mary's Ascension Church of Gelvonai

Gelvonai Church is closely related to the conflicts between catholic and evangelical reformers in Lithuania in the 17th century. The church was first mentioned in 1642 when the Gelvonai owner built an Evangelical Reformed Chapel. But after a few years, in 1686, Jonas Krizostomas Daumantas Sesickis, the new owner of Gelvonai, handed the chapel over to the Franciscan Friars and built a monastery for them. Thus, the parish was established. In 1736, the church (former chapel) was rebuilt. In 1828, monks preached in Polish and only occasionally in Lithuanian. In 1832, the Russian authorities closed the monastery and built the barracks with a 2-floor stone wall. In 1892, the wooden church burnt down. In 1895 to 1898, the current tufted stone church put lengthwise was built. The construction was funded by Montvila and Pliateriai families.
