Bernatonys Mound

The Bernatoniai mound is located on the cape of the highlands in Bernatoniai village, Raudondvaris eldership, Kaunas district, at the confluence of Bajoriškės and Gynia streams. It is presumed that there was Kęstutis’ castle Bayery, mentioned by the chronicler Kasperas Šiucas in 1396. Later the castle was burnt by the Teutonic Order. No more detailed archaeological research has been carried out. Hence, the theory of Kestutis’ castle has been neither confirmed, nor rejected. A 35 m mound site is triangular and elongated in the east-west. Its 30 m western part descends to the east. The 36-38 m high slopes are steep. The mound dates back to the early 2nd millennium. It was recognised a state protected object by the order of the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. The area of the monument is 26,000 m². The mound is rarely visited by people because of its poor publicity.
